I was about to lose my cool. She was taking forever to get ready for bed. I shouldn’t have been surprised because she never rushes through the list of things she’s supposed to do before getting a bed.
However, tonight, all she had left to do was to retrieve her watch from my bathroom and put it on the charger. She was gone for 7 minutes, and as she jumped in to her bed, right before I could start my spiel about how things shouldn’t take so long, she smiled and sweetly said, “wanna know why I was gone so long?” I paused, took a breath and told her I did.
“I made your bed.”
You could’ve knocked me over with a feather. I made her repeat herself because I was sure she could not have just told me that she made my bed.
“I made your bed, momma. I’m not sure if I got all the pillows right, but I laid them all up at the top of the bed and turned down the covers for you. I put a teddy bear for you to snuggle to. Now, all you have to do is slide in. I know you’re tired and I wanted to do something nice.”
I hugged her and kissed her on her forehead, assuring her that I was sure the pillows were perfect and how much I appreciated her kindness.

After she fell asleep, I made my way to my bed and found it as she described. I slid in, as instructed, and am snuggling the bear. Tonight, I am going to bed with a grateful heart for two reasons:
For the sweet girl that showed such thoughtfulness
For not losing my cool and ruining the moment
