Love looks different

Jeannine Bailey

As a single mom in her 40’s, Valentine’s Day looks a little different than in the movies. One of my biggest internal struggles is not feeling like I truly fit in anywhere or feeling like nobody has “chosen” me.

It would be easy to be a little jaded (especially after my experience with online dating this past year – good LORD), but if I step back and look at my life objectively, I am surrounded by love, even though it doesn’t look like it has in the past or what I hope it will in the future.

What does love look like for me this year?

  • Love looks like in-laws that drove over an hour to drop off flowers for me and a present for their granddaughter.

  • Love looks like a daughter that asked you to take her to the store so she could get you something and spent 20 minutes shopping on her own to find the perfect present – and then, willingly gets up early to give it to you.

  • Love looks like friends sending funny articles and sharing inside jokes.

  • Love looks like a rescue dog that can never get enough affection and wants to be next to me all day long.

  • Love looks like the pastor and greeters of the new church we started attended lighting up and welcoming me back on our second visit.

  • Love looks like family that go out of their way to come visit and spend quality time.

  • Love looks like readers leaving nice comments or sharing what I write with someone else.

  • Love looks like getting texts or calls from members of my small group to follow up on something I shared in our last meeting.

Surrounded, I tell you – simply surrounded. I am a lucky woman – and feeling very loved.

And in case you don’t know it, I love YOU, today and every day.
